While politicians worldwide are talking about a better environment, volunteers are repairing over 18,000 items under the Repair Caf\u00e9\u2019s flag every month. On March 7 the thousandth Repair Caf\u00e9 opened up in the Dutch town of Bathmen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

From Germany to Brazil and from Canada to India and Australia: in no fewer than 24 countries, volunteers are organising weekly or monthly Repair Caf\u00e9 meetings. Back in 2009, Martine Postma, director of the Repair Caf\u00e9 Foundation, was still hoping for twelve Repair Caf\u00e9s in the Netherlands: one in each province. \u201cThat we now have one thousand, spread across six continents, is simply amazing\u201d, she beams. \u201cThis shows that increasingly more people have had enough of this consumer society.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nAccording to Postma, Repair Caf\u00e9s could reach an even greater audience if more volunteers would specialise in repairing smartphones, laptops and tablets. \u201cThese devices have become part of daily life and often break down\u201d, she says. \u201cBut Repair Caf\u00e9 volunteers still repair mostly vacuum cleaners and coffeemakers.\u201d That’s why the Repair Caf\u00e9 Foundation thinks about possibilities to school volunteers in repairing these modern consumer electronics.<\/p>\n
