Dear Frances,

All local Repair Cafés of our network work autonomously, they plan and organize their meetings themselves and their team of volunteer repairers can have different fields of expertise. Therefore, you can best contact the Repair Café in question directly, to see what the possibilities are to help you with this.

You can find all Repair Cafés of our network and a useful map to zoom in here on our website.
And information about Chailey Repair Café here.

Good luck and best regards,

Claudia

Comment on New: Starter Kit for Your Own Linux Repair Café by claudia https://www.repaircafe.org/en/new-starter-kit-for-your-own-linux-repair-cafe/#comment-20183 Tue, 18 Nov 2025 11:35:34 +0000 https://www.repaircafe.org/new-starter-kit-for-your-own-linux-repair-cafe/#comment-20183 In reply to Tim Tucker.

Dear Tim,
the Linux starter kit gives the advice that the owner of the laptop to be migrated to Linux should backup all of his or her data, e.g. on a USB stick, because all data on the device will get lost during the installation of Linux.

Best regards from the team of
Repair Café International

In other words, is there an attempt to backup data from the existing OS (presumably Windows) and restore it after Linux is loaded?

Comment on And the winner is… Repair Café! by Glyn Atkinson https://www.repaircafe.org/en/and-the-winner-is-repair-cafe/#comment-20088 Thu, 13 Nov 2025 16:52:52 +0000 https://www.repaircafe.org/en-de-winnaar-is-repair-cafe/#comment-20088 Grimsby In Bloom joined the Repair Cafe network in April, 2023.

6 volunteers work in different skill sets to stop materials from being thrown in waste skips.

Currently, 1 volunteer has repaired over 40 faulty clocks.

Other notable repairs includes a set of 1940 Disney Xmas tree lights, a 1920 gramophone, a 1957 Ferguson record player, and an Olivetti typewriter not used for 40 years which now works perfectly.

Our local Council awarded us an Environmental.Civic Award last year – pucture already forwarded to you.

This group has won the N E Lincolnshire Council Civic Award for Environmental impact, attending our local Town Hall Awards ceremony. We can supply a photo of us receiving this award at the ceremony if needed.

We are very proud of being able to reduce waste and recycling items that have broken down.

Comment on Starter kit for your own Linux Repair Café coming soon by Rieneke https://www.repaircafe.org/en/starter-kit-for-your-own-linux-repair-cafe-coming-soon/#comment-20046 Tue, 11 Nov 2025 09:56:30 +0000 https://www.repaircafe.org/?p=54179#comment-20046 In reply to Evan.

Dear Evan,
Thank you for your message and for sharing your concerns.

Repair Café International’s goal is to bring repair — in a modern and accessible way — back into local communities. Our mission is to preserve and share repair knowledge, and to strengthen social cohesion by connecting neighbours from diverse backgrounds and motivations through hands-on gatherings.

In practice, we do this by supporting local organisers with additional services, such as providing repair materials.

We see Linux as one of many ways to repair a computer. Many devices become unsafe to use because of outdated software, they are artificially aged to seem obsolete.
Installing Linux can extend the lifecycle of such computers.

We are not competing with any commercial product; in fact, our materials also discuss how to install Linux on MacBooks. Our goal is to address the problem of planned obsolescence and discarded unnecessarily. We offer a practical, volunteer-driven solution — not a replacement product or commercial alternative.

Each Repair Café is entirely free to decide whether or not to make use of the research and starter kit we have developed.

We are also very clear about the risks of data loss. Our materials include clear disclaimers to ensure that users understand and accept these risks before any installation is carried out.

Best,
Rieneke
